Conservation charters

Since the 1877 Manifesto of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, conservation zealots have been drafting and ratifying Charters, Declarations, Standards, Treaties and Guidelines.

This is my attempt at a comprehensive collection of these documents. Please let me know about any I have missed.

Burra charter

The Burra Charter (The Australia ICOMOS charter for places of cultural significance). This is the new, improved version (adopted November 1999) of the classic Australian conservation charter.

Procedures for undertaking studies and reports

The Guidelines have not been brought into line with the new 1999 version of the charter, and still refer to the previous (1988) version. So I have kept the 1988 version of the charter here. It is also on the Australia ICOMOS web site.

Other ICOMOS charters

Australian natural heritage charter

Full title Australian natural heritage charter: standards and principles for the conservation of places of natural heritage significance. It is founded on the Burra charter.
